Choosing between a pallet network and a dedicated vehicle is one of the most common freight decisions for UK businesses. This guide sets out the key factors so you can make the right choice for your load, timeline and budget.

What is pallet delivery?

Pallet delivery uses a national network of hubs and spokes. Your goods are collected, consolidated with other consignments at a regional hub, sorted overnight and delivered the following day. This model works well for non-urgent, ambient goods that can tolerate overnight handling and a fixed delivery window.

What is a dedicated vehicle (full load)?

A dedicated van or vehicle carries only your load, direct from collection to delivery. There is no overnight hub handling, no consolidation with other freight, and no fixed network timetable. The vehicle goes when you need it to go.

When to use pallet delivery

  • Non-urgent ambient goods with a next-day delivery window
  • Loads that are palletised and compatible with network handling
  • Cost is the primary consideration and timing is flexible
  • The destination is well-served by the pallet network

When to use a dedicated vehicle

  • Same-day or time-critical delivery is required
  • The load is fragile, high-value or cannot tolerate multiple handling points
  • The goods are temperature-sensitive or require specific vehicle conditions
  • The destination is off-network or requires a specific delivery window
  • The load fills or nearly fills a vehicle — making a dedicated movement cost-competitive

The cost comparison

Pallet delivery is typically cheaper per pallet for ambient goods on standard routes. However, for time-critical or full-load movements, a dedicated vehicle is often more cost-effective when the alternative is paying pallet rates for a large consignment, or when a delay in the pallet network creates a business cost that outweighs the transport saving.

Cockrams offers both pallet delivery and dedicated vehicle movements. All jobs are quote-led based on load details, timing and route.
